Michelle Douglas
Copper BeechMichelle Douglas began her yoga journey in 2012 mostly as a way to exercise and relieve her anxiety. What she did not know was that the practice would forever change her life and uncover sacred truths. By 2016 she had joined her first yoga teacher training where she could no longer ignore her darkest secrets, and finally admitted to herself, friends, and family that she had been in an abusive relationship for 12 years. This was the beginning of her very messy spiritual awakening.
Doing the work broke her heart open. For the past five years, Michelle has immersed herself in “the work”: dismantling systems of oppression within herself. She learned about unresolved traumas she had not worked through. She learned about privilege, equity, and justice. And she came to understand the intersectionality of spirituality and social justice and how one cannot exist without the other.
Michelle truly believes that the way to create systemic change is by doing our own inner work. By looking inward first, we awaken to love and can leave the world a little better than we found it.

January marks the completion of my first 90 days as the new Executive Director of Copper Beech Institute and I couldn't be more grateful for the warm welcome of this community that is made up of our board, staff, facilitators and participants. Each of you in your own particular way help to make Copper Beech what it is, and helped to get CBI to it's current moment of evolution. With that said, I am excited to share that many inspired changes are afoot! ✨
We are thrilled to introduce our new Executive Director, Danae Laura! Danae’s work has always been about nourishment: nourishing bodies, nourishing minds, and nourishing society. Before being named ED, Danae held leadership roles as a social entrepreneur in the natural food and wellness industries and the education field. Prior to joining CBI, Danae was CEO of Compassionate Commerce, Director of Selfmade, and President of The Abby Fund, among others.
So much has happened at Copper Beech over the last year, and as the current chairwoman of the Board of Directors, I wanted to take a moment to share them with you and introduce myself. Last month, we welcomed a new leader to take us into 2024 and beyond. Our Human Resources Committee took careful consideration to find a mindful, mission-driven leader committed to community engagement and compassionate action, with a focus on social justice. I am grateful for the committee and the entire Board of Directors who took on this monumental task.
On Tuesday morning, the Copper Beech team arrived at the Riverfront Boathouse in Hartford for a highly anticipated Press Conference led by Mayor Luke Bronin. We mingled on the deck overlooking the Connecticut River—the sun shining and the air buzzing with excitement.
Hugs and handshakes were exchanged as we awaited the public launch of a groundbreaking partnership—culminating years’ worth of research and planning.
We've got some very exciting news to share! In an effort to make our programs more accessible, we've been working hard to roll out a new payment plan system. After several weeks of trial and error, we are thrilled to share that payment plans are now available for select programs! 🥳 Reserve your spot with as little as 10% down (deposits vary by program), followed by equal installments due every two weeks.
As I delved into the work of Cone and other progressive Christians, I saw that it was possible to reclaim my Christian faith. While I was working to release the patriarchal, white-centric, and conservative form of Christianity I had inherited, I didn’t have to lose the beautiful aspects of the tradition that I cherished.
On April 24th, on behalf of CBI, I attended the United Way of Great Waterbury’s 37th Celebration and Awards. Picture this: a room buzzing with anticipation, pulsating with the spirit of achievement and unity. And let me tell you, folks, it was a night to remember, dedicated to honoring the incredible power of philanthropy and community partnership.
